Uppingham School

Uppingham School offers one of the widest ranges of sporting opportunities for pupils in the UK. The standard team sports of rugby, lacrosse, football, cricket, netball and hockey are available to all pupils as well as swimming and athletics. The choice is then extended to include aerobics, squash, tennis, badminton, basketball, cross-country, dance, fencing, golf, shooting and sailing.

The Uppingham philosophy is to encourage team spirit in its pupils regardless of ability and it achieves this from an early age by organising competitions at House and School level. This helps nurture self-confidence and teamwork which are essential elements in every child’s character development.

The School employs highly qualified and experienced coaches to assist pupils take full advantage of the sporting opportunities and to help develop their skills.  In addition, Uppingham employs a number of specialist coaches whose role is to advance the abilities of all the students and develop elite sporting abilities..

Uppingham School is very well equipped with sports facilities. The School’s playing fields comprise 65 acres of well-maintained pitches for the team sports and athletics. There are three artificial surfaces to ensure year-round training and playing of hockey and football (one of the surfaces is floodlit) and the tennis courts are a mix of hard court surfaces and astroturf.

In mid-2011 the School formally opened its sports centre which is quite possibly the finest facility of its kind in any UK school. The building which is located within the heart of the school includes a six court sports hall, a six lane 25m swimming pool, a fitness studio with 50 of the latest work stations, a gymnasium, three squash courts and two dance studios, nine netball courts, Fives courts and twelve tennis courts.

As well as an extensive diary of intra and inter-school competitions and tournaments, the School regularly organises tours to other countries including to the southern hemisphere. These are often the sporting highlights of a pupil’s Uppingham career and are excellent in providing the right balance of personal challenge, social awareness and camaraderie. Recent tours and overseas tournaments include South Africa and the UAE.
